Reed, in conjunction with The Joseph W. Luter, III School of Business Academic Internship Program at Christopher Newport University (CNU), provides a supplemental source of learning for CNU students through the academic internship program. The Luter College Business Curriculum Committee has approved Reed as an internship host agency. Students interested in participating in the program with Reed Integration should contact Reed.

Course Description

480 Academic Internship courses are designed to serve as a supplemental source of learning and also enhance a student’s academic program and career objectives. The student will be engaged in a unique (3-way partnership) between an approved agency and the Luter College of Business and Leadership. The learning experience will be guided by a learning contract outlining a specific work component (job description) and academic component (learning objectives, strategies, evaluation methods and final project output documents).

Philosophy & Objectives

The Luter College of Business and Leadership recognizes the educational value of practical experiential learning which involve the business student outside the traditional classroom, allowing for professional application of theory and skills. Because of a commitment to this philosophy, the courses above have been established to meet the following objectives:

  1. To apply business administration theory and skills to a practical experience within an approved host agency.
  2. To gain further knowledge of how businesses operate through experience within a specific assignment with a site agency supervisor acting as mentor.
  3. To gain experience with the job search process and provide a foundation for future job placement.
  4. To contribute to a student’s intellectual and ethical growth – by providing an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in the workplace, and to gain a practical perspective from which to reflect upon and evaluate classroom learning.

An academically sound internship supports the mission of the Luter College of Business and Leadership by providing feedback, which can be used in determining the need for new courses and adjustment of existing courses; new insights into the relevance of course content; enhanced classroom teaching; promotion of Luter Business graduates to employers; visibility and credibility of the Luter College of Business and Leadership in the community; and renewed enthusiasm in the classroom.

Procedures and Requirements

The Luter College Business Academic Internship is designed to be a structured practical professional experience; therefore, it is under the supervision of qualified academic and host agency personnel – A Luter business faculty member (faculty mentor) and an internship supervisor in the host agency. The following requirements apply to internships:

Internships will require a minimum of 100 hours on-site work, and be accorded 3 semester hours of credit.

  1. “BUSN 480 – Business Internships” may only be taken once, and is considered a free elective.
  2. Registration for an internship has to be approved by successfully competing in an application/selection process.
  3. The intern must be an officially declared major in The Luter College of Business and Leadership.
  4. The intern must have earned 75 hours of academic credit prior to beginning the internship (application for an internship can be submitted during the semester prior to enrollment).

The intern must complete a written learning contract with Reed’s site supervisor and the faculty mentor. The learning contract must outline learning objectives, learning strategies, evaluation methods, and final deliverables prior to beginning of the internship (3rd month of the semester preceding the internship).

The internship will be graded (A to F) by the faculty mentor. The determination of the final grade will be based on the internship deliverables, Reed’s supervisor evaluation, the faculty advisor mentor and an intern self-assessment.

Internships may be taken during the fall, spring or summer semesters.

I use it all the time to explain to Management the parts of the System Life Cycle Overview. It's a great Systems Engineering talking point tool! I found this product to be a great aid along the way of getting ready to the CSEP Cert. One could use it either as a stand-alone review tool or along with the Systems Engineering Handbook (V3.1) while preparing for the CSEP Cert. Seasoned Systems Engineers might find it useful to understand INCOSE's Systems Engineering view (if applicable). Great product, great seller (from their home page I could tell this product has been devised by active members of INCOSE). I purchased this product as a study aid for my CSEP Exam. The sheet was sealed in very durable plastic. You could probably leave it in the rain without any impact. It was very helpful to me because of the way I study. I write down the answers to questions and then check my answers. (Things like, name the six lifecycle stages, 25 project processes, and 22 System Engineering tasks.) Almost everything on the sheet was information that an individual should know for the exam. This "cheat sheet" does not replace reading the SE Handbook. It simply serves as a quick lookup for some of the memorization required. Please note that this is the sheet is based on the INCOSE SE Handbook v3.1 and the CSEP exam is transitioning to v3.2. I passed the exam."
